The Marine Protected Area of Plemmirio, created in 2004, is located on the east coast in the province of Syracuse, and includes the sea of the eastern part of the Penisola della Maddalena with an area of about 2.500 hectares of sea.
The seabed in this area of sea are with areas low, then reach a depth of about 30-40 meters, ideal habitat for different marine species such as tonni, cernie, dendici, occhiate, saraghi, murene, spigole, etc. etc.
The houses surrounding the area, are mainly particularly prestigious villas, seafront or ocean view with lush gardens planted, trees and plants, many are residential homes, where families live all year, because the city of Syracuse is very near.
In summer some of these beautiful villas are rented to tourist Italian and tourist foreign that every year come to holiday in this area.
The establishment of marine protected area “Plemmirio” in “Penisola Maddalena – Capo Murro di Porco” it has the purpose of protecting all of the interested area ambient and has the following aim:
a) the protection and the valorisation of natural, chemical, physical characteristics and marine and costal biodiversity with interventions of environmental environmental restoration measures;
b) the promotion of environmental education and the diffusion of knowledge of marine and coastal areas of the protected marine area with the realization of educational and informatives programs;
c) the realization of study programs, monitoring and scientific research in the fields of natural sciences and environmental protection to ensure the knowledge of the area;
d) promotion of the development of the area, in particular the development of traditional activities, local cultures.
